Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Genesis 1:26 (NIV)

In Our Image

The Bank of Canada has a webpage that has images of Canadian banknotes that are free to use by anyone for non-commercial use. The instructions are that they images must be reproduced accurately and without alterations. It is really interesting to notice how the Queen’s image has changed decade by decade. She has aged gracefully. We are so used to seeing her image on our banknotes and coins that we don’t usually get to view a lifetime of changes in one location.

One of the foundational principles of the kingdom of God is the innate value of human life. Right from the beginning, we read that God created human beings separately from everything else that He spoke into being. Genesis 1:26 describes it this way: “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” I love how we see at the beginning of this verse the Triune God communicating – “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” God was going to do something unique here – He was going to create men and women, and breathe life into them. They would have the great responsibility to care for God’s creation – they were to be His hands and feet on this planet that He had created. It is very clear that we who belong to Jesus Christ have a great responsibility to care for creation. That responsibility has been passed down from Adam to our generation. Let’s honour the Creator as we do.
