Words from the Heart for Wednesday September 1st, 2021
Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 (NLT)
One of the reasons Canada is a favourite destination for immigrants is because of our government-funded health care system. Patience is required, however, in most provinces. There is often a 3 month waiting period before benefits begin. It is important for immigrants to contact their local ministry of health to know how long they will have to wait. They also need to ensure that they have private health insurance to cover any health-care needs during the waiting period.
Followers of Jesus are called to live in community. The book of Acts records that immediately following the birth of the Church on the Day of Pentecost, the believers were sharing everything and were constantly together. In his first letter to the Christians at Thessalonika, Paul gives this counsel in 1 Thessalonians 5:14: “Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.” As we live in community with other believers, we are called to encourage each other in our walk with the Lord. Sometimes we will need to call others to pull their own weight and to put their gifts into practice for the sake of the whole body of Christ. Others we will need to mentor so they can get over their timidity and stand strong in their faith and witness. And with everyone we are to evidence patience. There is no room in the family of God for anger and irritability with each other. We are to show the love of Jesus to each other, and encourage each other to grow in our faith and our love for others.
These have been words from the heart.
