I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13 NIV

I Can

As Jeremy Hansen prepares for his mission around the moon, the Ontario-born astronaut is thinking about the ways Canada could help tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. The 10-day mission involves slingshotting into deep space for a figure-8 maneuver around the far side of the moon. It would mark the first time any human has ventured so far from Earth. For Hansen, being a part of the mission underscores the value Canada can bring to international partnerships.

When I was a child, my favourite book was The Little Engine That Could. It was a story about a small train engine that had to climb a steep hill pulling cars full of wonderful things to children waiting on the other side of the mountain. Almost a hundred years old, it is still enjoyed by children today. There are a lot of things in life that are beyond our abilities. But when God calls us to do something, He always provides what we need to accomplish the task. That’s why the apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Paul has just been writing about being content even when the circumstances of life seem impossible. In a human sense this is impossible – usually when life gets difficult, we sit back and complain. But when we are in the centre of God’s will for our lives and we know that we are walking in obedience to the Lord, no matter what comes our way, we experience His peace and contentment. If you are experiencing challenging times today, surrender your life fully to Jesus and His peace will ensure a contentment that will carry you through.

These have been words from the heart.
