Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2 NIV

Set Free

A Canadian businessman returned to Canada on August 18, 2011 after a three-and-a-half-year stay in a Mexican jail, when a judge finally cleared him of all charges. Pavel Kulisek was reunited with his family at Vancouver International Airport. The married father of two told CTV British Columbia, “For three-and-a-half years, I could see just concrete…. When I came to Vancouver, we were driving and I saw the green stuff all around me — it was just like you are in heaven.”

There is no better description of the human condition than what Paul writes in the 7th chapter of his epistle to the Christians in Rome. He speaks of himself when he says the very things he hates doing are the things he finds himself doing repeatedly. He makes the honest statement “oh, what a wretched man I am!” We have all been there. Fortunately, Paul doesn’t end things there – he goes on to affirm that Jesus has delivered him – “thanks be to God!” Chapter 8 gives the how. Romans 8:1-2 says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us. He gives us life and sets us free from the law of sin and death. No longer does sin drive us, no longer does death hold sway over us. There is no greater freedom. Don’t allow sin to drag you back into slavery. Walk in the freedom that Jesus has provided for you. Walk in victory.

These have been words from the heart.
