Words from the Heart for Wednesday May 9th, 2018

The earth belongs to the Lord. And so does everything in it. The world belongs to him. And so do all those who live in it. He set it firmly on the oceans. He made it secure on the waters.

Psalm 24:1-2 (NIRV)

The Earth Belongs to the Lord

People can choose to ignore the Lord and even try to deny Him in their lives. But that doesn’t change the truth that the Lord created our world and He has a prior claim on it all. That includes all people, too. He will reveal His heart and continue to draw them to Himself in answer to prayer.

Property rights allow us to live free of the control of others, economically and politically, and act as a defense against the encroaching power of governments. You might be surprised to learn that while most of the industrialized world has guaranteed property rights within their constitutions, Canada does not. Common law tradition recognizes outright expropriation should never occur without compensation, Canadian governments have given themselves the power, through the passage of laws and regulations, to expropriate private property without consultation or compensation.

In our world, the creator of something isn’t always the legal owner. He or she could have signed away their rights, or have had someone else claim it was theirs. Trademark and copyright laws can get a little cloudy sometimes. Not so for the ultimate Creator. The God who spoke our world into being has no equals. The most creative human being can only take what is available to create something new. Our God created everything from nothing. He has no need for anything in order create everything. There is no one else that can claim that, so it isn’t surprising that the Psalmist writes this in Psalm 24:1-2: “The earth belongs to the Lord. And so does everything in it. The world belongs to him. And so do all those who live in it. He set it firmly on the oceans. He made it secure on the waters.” God has the rights to everything in, under, and on the earth. That includes you and me. We don’t even have any claim over our own lives. We belong to our Creator who loves us dearly.
