Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

1 Timothy 6:17 NIV

I will never forget a conversation I had with a ministry leader in a SE Asian country who asked me what the biggest challenge to the Gospel in Canada is. It didn’t take me long to answer that question – materialism. In spite of how challenging life can be economically, Canadians are generally comfortable, certainly when compared to many people in this world. Many Canadians are doing just fine, and so don’t see a need for Jesus. Being wealthy, which is how many others in this world view the average Canadian, has always been a challenge to the Gospel. Paul would write this to those who were already followers of Jesus in 1 Timothy 6:17: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” In spite of how so many put their trust in their bank accounts and investments, it can all disappear in an instant. Only Jesus is the unchanging God in whom we can trust completely. Put your trust in Him alone, for this world and eternity.

These have been words from the heart.
