You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.

Psalm 86:5 (NIV)

Steadfast

Cal Foote gained the nickname “Mr. Steadfast” in the World Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo. With Canada up 4-2 in the third period against the Finns, mere inches preserved their two-goal lead. Goaltender Carter Hart made the initial save, but the puck tumbled in behind him. As it continued to make its way to the goal line, Foote seemingly came out nowhere. His hockey sense and his dependability once again ensured that he was where he needed to be.

The world celebrates those who are steadfast, in their commitment to something or someone, in their love for others, in their walk with the Lord. We admire those who stick with a job, or a marriage or an ideal. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be steadfast in our commitment to Him and in the way we live our lives so that others might see Jesus in us. After all, God is steadfast in His love for us, and not us alone. The Psalmist wrote about this in Psalm 86:5: “You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.” There is nothing inconsistent in the love of God for us. The false gods of the world are fickle – you never know how they are going to be on any given day. Some days they will bless you, and on other days they will make your life miserable. They aren’t real, of course, but their followers spend their days trying to make their false gods happy. What a contrast to the one true God. He is always forgiving and good. He is always abounding in love to all who call on Him. Have you?
