Words from the Heart for Wednesday March 17th, 2021
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11 (NRSV)
Sun and Shield
Back in 2019, the largest solar energy project in Canada received provincial approval and the company hoped to start construction in southern Alberta next year. At the time, Dan Balaba, president and CEO of Greengate, the Calgary-based company behind the solar farm, said “It will be, by far, the largest solar energy project in Canada and one of the largest in the world.” He said the project in Vulcan County would include 1.5 million solar panels that will generate about 800 million kWh per year, enough to power 100,000 homes.
When parents bring their children to a beach or pool on a hot summer day, they always make sure that they bring plenty of sunscreen. We all love the sun, and the vitamin D it provides is good for our physical and mental health. But too much of it can be life threatening. So, we put sunscreen on to shield against the harmful rays of the sun. So, what does the Psalmist mean when he writes in Psalm 84:11: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly.” I love how the Lord is described here – he is both sun and shield. Like the sun, He is the one who is the source of life, and provides healing and power to us, physically, spiritually and emotionally. As the Psalmist says here, He bestows favour and honour, and withholds nothing from those who love Him. At the same time, He is our shield, protecting us from all in this world that would try to destroy us. How has the Lord been your sun and shield lately?
These have been words from the heart.
