“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28 NIV

In God We Have Rest

A rest area is a public facility located next to a large thoroughfare such as a motorway, expressway, or highway, at which drivers and passengers can rest, eat, or refuel without exiting onto secondary roads. In Canada they are also known as service centres. Most service centres are concentrated along Ontario’s 400-series highways and Quebec’s Autoroute networks, while rest areas are found along the highway networks of all provinces, and the Trans-Canada Highway.

Followers of Jesus are some of the busiest people in the world. And I do mean, in the world. Over the past two decades I’ve had the privilege of visiting Christians in dozens of countries around the world, and they are all busy in ministry, serving the Lord with complete ambition. This shouldn’t surprise us – the Gospels and book of Acts, which record the life of Jesus and the early Church, are filled with action. We love to tell the stories of Jesus’ ministry. What we don’t always focus on are the times that Jesus gets away to have some rest – the times He went out on a boat or up on a mountain to spend time with His Father and rest. Jesus knows what it’s like to be weary in well doing. So, in Matthew 11:28 He says, “‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’” Jesus does call us to be busy in our service for Him – those of us redeemed by His grace are called to take Him to the world. But His call to His first disciples was first to be with Him and then to go out. Enjoy Jesus’ rest today.
