Words from the Heart for Wednesday June 17th, 2020
If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith
Romans 12:6b (NIV)
Back in those heady days before we had heard of COVID-19 and the word pandemic was only used historically, the Ipsos-Reid polling people asked Canadians what they were expecting for 2020. When asked if they felt Canada would be facing a natural disaster, 59% said they did not. What was on most Canadian’s minds was global warming – 75% thought global temperatures would increase in 2020. Only 59% of Canadians thought 2020 was going to be a bad year for them, fewer than in most other countries.
Futurists love to predict the future. Some do an amazing job of getting things right. We look back on some of the predictions made a few decades back about what life would look like in 2020 and we are surprised that some managed to paint a fairly realistic picture of life today. But none of them got it perfectly correct. The best made educated prognostications. Only the God of the Universe has the future in His hands. The Bible, among other things, is a book of prophecy. Over 300 Hebrew Scripture prophecies were fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ into the world. So, it shouldn’t surprise us to read that at the top of the list of gifts in Romans 12 is this one in verse 6: “If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith.” Biblically, prophecy has two aspects – foretelling and forthtelling. In this case, the gift of prophecy gives the person the ability to understand what the Lord is doing among the people of God and speaking into that. Some call them perceivers. Because of this, they are often the prayer warriors among the Body of Christ. If you have this gift, you are called to operate in faith.
These have been words from the heart.
