Words from the Heart for Wednesday July 24th, 2019
You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.
Ecclesiastes 11:9 (NIV)
An Awareness of God
It has been argued that the Maple Leaf flag has done more than anything else to make the world aware of Canada. The maple leaf became a recognized symbol of Canada in 1965, when it was adopted as the new Canadian flag. Before that, Canadians flew what was known as the Red Ensign, but it didn’t have official status as a national flag. During the federal election campaign in 1963, Liberal leader Lester Pearson promised that a new Canadian flag would be developed. After debates and several discussions, the maple leaf was recognized as the most appropriate choice.
No matter how old we are, we need to keep an awareness of God before us. King Solomon lived a full life. And with the gift of wisdom that God gave him, he was given a unique opportunity to look at his world and see things a bit more clearly than the rest of us. He understood, for example, that as young people we tend to be a bit more carefree than when we get a bit older, and the responsibilities we have a bit heavier. So, Solomon gives some solid advice in Ecclesiastes 11:9: “You who are young, be happy while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” Solomon isn’t been a spoil sport here. He tells young people to enjoy their youth – he knew how fleeting it is. But he also reminded them that God is always watching and will bring them into judgment. So enjoy life, but do so within the bounds that God has set in His word.
