Words from the Heart for Wednesday January 8th, 2020
You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:3 (NIV)
No Other Gods
There are some things that are uniquely Canadian, found only in Canada. Hudson Bay blankets, for example. Few items are as iconically Canadian. They have been produced by the Hudson Bay Company since 1779. Then, while they likely haven’t been around quite so long, there is no more a Canadian treat that a butter tart. These little pastries are filled with butter, sugar, syrup and egg, and are found in no other country in the world other than the Great White North.
There is only one true God. The Bible teaches this truth from its earliest pages. The heart of the Christian faith is that while men and women often make gods out of all sorts of things, these are all fake, lifeless and powerless. We are so good at making idols out of anything that captures our attention – and those idols are not necessarily statues made by hands. Our god is anything or anyone who drives our thinking, our actions, our worldview. In our part of the world these can be such things as entertainment, sex, drugs, sports or materialism. While we say we live in a secular country, the reality is that every human being looks somewhere outside of ourselves for that which gives our lives meaning and purpose. But nothing ultimately satisfies outside of a relationship with the Living God, who created us and who loves us dearly. The Lord knew that, and so at the top of the Ten Commandments, in Exodus 20:3, He commands, “You shall have no other gods before me.” We are called to ensure that nothing take the place of Jesus as first in our lives.
These have been words from the heart.
