Words from the Heart for Wednesday January 2nd, 2019
He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.”
Genesis 5:2 (NLT)
He Called Them Human
In the summer of 2016, archaeologists working with the support of the Hakai Institute began excavations on Triquet Island BC. Since then, they have uncovered a number of artifacts linked to an ancient human settlement on the island. From the charred remains of an ancient hearth, the scientists used tweezers to painstakingly extract a few tiny flakes of charcoal. Carbon dating of the flakes revealed the hearth was some 14,000 years old, making it one of the oldest settlements ever discovered in North America.
The second chapter of the book of Genesis tells us that Adam gave names to all the animals. It was one his roles in the creation story. He had a unique part to play and was given a great honour by the Creator in being given this responsibility. And in a world that teaches there is no difference between human beings and any other member of the animal kingdom, very early on the Bible teaches that there is a great difference. While Adam named all the animals, listen to what Genesis 5:2 says: “He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them ‘human’.” While Adam gave names to all the animals, it was God who named us human beings. God honoured the highest of His creation by giving us our name. In this simple gesture, He bestows on the human race a great honour. It is another sign that human beings are set apart from the rest of God’s creation. He who breathed life in Adam’s lungs, and who created him and Eve in His image, calls us by the name He has given us. May we respond to our Creator by committing our lives to serve Him and live in Him through faith in Him, whose name is Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
