Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV
Humble Yourself
Canada is a huge country, but here is something that should humble us. Canada is home to just some 38 million people across an area of ten million square kilometres. This means it comes in at 3.8 people per square kilometre. That same square kilometre in the United States would have 35 people in it. Around 90% of Canada is uninhabited. And 90% of Canadians live within 500 kilometres of the border with the United States.

Pride is a big deal in the eyes of the world. We are told to have pride in who we are, what we accomplish and who we belong to. The Kingdom of God has an entirely different take on it, as you might imagine. Listen to what the apostle says in 1 Peter 5:6-7: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” What a contrast to the “looking out for Number One” attitude of the world. In the Kingdom of God, those who humble themselves are elevated. Those who recognize the supremacy of God in their lives and the world are honoured and elevated. When we bow our knee to the living God, when we recognize our own need and His authority, we are blessed and accepted by our Creator and welcomed into His forever family. If that was the only promise here, it would be more than enough. But when we humble ourselves before Him, we can cast our anxiety on Him and know He will replace our care with His peace, our concern with His love. Humble yourself – He will lift you up.
These have been words from the heart.
