Words from the Heart for Wednesday February 27th, 2019

Never stop reading this Book of the Law. Day and night you must think about what it says. Make sure you do everything written in it. Then things will go well with you. And you will have great success. Here is what I am commanding you to do. Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. I am the Lord your God. I will be with you everywhere you go.

Joshua 1:8-9 (NIRV)

The Book

Since 2013, Library and Archives Canada has been home to the first complete and authorized version of the Bible to be printed in Canada. This Bible consists of two volumes and was published around 1832 or 1833 by John Henry White in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Only five copies are known to exist in library collections: three of these are in Canada, while the other two are in the United States. This important piece of Canada’s published heritage was repatriated from the United States on December 20, 2013.

The recent Bible Engagement survey held by Bible agencies here in Canada shows a shocking lack of Bible reading in Canada. Even among self-proclaimed evangelicals, the reading of God’s word is significantly down over just a few years ago. And it is having an negative impact on how Christians are living their lives. God knew millennia ago that there would be a spiritual battle over God’s people reading God’s word. So in Joshua 1:8-9, Joshua tells the people of Israel: “Never stop reading this Book of the Law. Day and night you must think about what it says. Make sure you do everything written in it. Then things will go well with you. And you will have great success. Here is what I am commanding you to do. Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. I am the Lord your God. I will be with you everywhere you go.”” Joshua recognized the tie between the reading of God’s word and success in life. A follower of Jesus simply cannot walk in victory without time in God’s word each day.
