Words from the Heart for Wednesday February 24th, 2021

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.

Colossians 3:12-13 (NLT)

It has been said that clothing makes a man or woman. You are what you wear. This isn’t a modern concept. Clothing has been used by men and women as a statement for millennia. The Bible uses clothing to make a bold statement about our spiritual lives as well. In Colossians 3:12-13, Paul writes: “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” Spiritual clothes make a Christian man or woman. You will notice that the clothing Paul speaks about here mirrors the fruit of the Spirit. When people look at us, the first thing they should notice is God’s work in us – the work of producing Christ-like fruit. They should also notice how grace-filled we are. As we have been forgiven, so we are called to forgive. What a profound impact Christians could have on this world if the spiritual clothing we always wear are the things listed here.
