Words from the Heart for Wednesday February 20th, 2019
It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.
Deuteronomy 13:4 (NIV)
Follow and Revere
Dr. Norman Bethune achieved international renown as a Canadian physician and social activist. He made significant contributions to thoracic surgery, writing manuals and inventing medical instruments, and was an early advocate of government-subsidized healthcare. He is revered by the Chinese for the time he spent in China serving on battlefields, training medical personnel, and setting up medical programs and hospitals. Due to his courage and medical innovations, he is considered a role model by Chinese society.
It is easy to follow a leader for whom we have great respect. Leaders who live consistent Christian lives and who mirror the nature of God, as far as that is humanly possible, find that people naturally follow. If this is true of human leaders, how much more is it true of God Himself. Those of us who have put our faith in Jesus have experienced His consistent loving leadership. So it is natural to be faithful to the command found in Deuteronomy 13:4: “It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.” Notice that the command is not simply to follow, but to revere. That is a heart matter. We follow because we respect Him and love Him. Over and over He has proven Himself to be faithful, and so we want to serve Him and hold fast to Him. Have you met Jesus in this intimate a way? You will find that He is faithful and loving and because of who He is, you will naturally want to love and serve Him.
These have been words from the heart.
