There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:18-19 NIV

No Fear in Love

According to the Public Safety Canada website, “Over the past 25 years, fear of criminal victimization has remained relatively steady with a small decline in recent years. On average, 31% of adult Canadians reported being afraid. However, women are more likely than men to report being afraid – 41% vs. 12%. Fear of crime also varies with geographical location. Levels of fear are lowest in Atlantic Canada at 14% and highest in British Columbia at 39%.”

Fear is a terrible thing to deal with. It paralyzes a person and can lead to a variety of mental illness. This is particularly true if we’ve done something that had led to the fear – the fear of being found out is particularly challenging. This is the fear that John deals with in his first epistle. 1 John 4:18-19 says “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.” I’ve met many people who get to the end of their life filled with fear. They recognize that they have no assurance of eternal life and no hope for the future. Often, they are gripped with fear. Only the perfect love of Jesus can cast out that fear. Only when a person puts their faith and trust in Jesus and accepts the gift of eternal life that was purchased on the cross, is fear lifted and peace experienced. One of the greatest of the gifts we received when we become followers of Jesus is that fear is gone, and eternity is ours. There is no fear in God’s love.
