For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 NIV
A Child Is Born
The first baby born in the province of British Colombia this year was a girl. The province announced in a tweet that she was born just a little after midnight, weighing in at five pounds and 10 ounces. She was born at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. In 2022, B.C.’s first baby was a boy and was born at 12:04 a.m. at the Victoria General Hospital weighing six pounds and six ounces. Birthdays are coming up for both of these New Year’s babies.
We all have moments in our lives that are memorable – events that are forever etched in our memories – graduations, our wedding, the birth of our children. The arrival of children into our families is a momentous event. Our lives will never be the same again. We hold our newborn baby in our arms and we ponder the future – for that new life and for us. There is a profound sense of mystery in every birth. That same sense of mystery continues to mark this Advent season. The Hebrew prophet spoke about this centuries before Jesus would arrive. Isaiah 9:6 says “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This child who was born on that first Christmas was special. As the Christmas carol says “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” Almighty God, the Creator of all things, had entered His creation. He became one of us that night. He still enters into every heart that reaches out in faith to Him. Has He been born in you?
These have been words from the heart.
