You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

Matthew 5:14 (NLT)

A City on a Hilltop

Lake Louise, Alberta, is the highest town in Canada with an elevation of 5,449 feet above sea level. The town only has 777 permanent residents, but it is a beautiful place to stop. When the Canadian Pacific built the transcontinental railroad, they also build luxury hotels to attract travelers. The highest elevation city in Canada, at 3,662 feet above sea level, is Kimberley in southeastern British Columbia. It is situated on rolling hills near the St. Mary River, just northwest of Cranbrook.

The Sea of Galilee is surrounded by hills. In the evening, if you sit by the shore of the lake, you can see lights sparkling from the villages, towns and kibbutzim that surround the lake. There were not electric lights, of course, in Jesus’s day, but the lights of fires and oil lamps still shone from the hillsides of Galilee at that time and Jesus’ used that as an illustration of how His followers were to live their lives. While He sat with His followers on the hills beside the Sea of Galilee, Jesus taught this in Matthew 5:14: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” We are called to represent Jesus in every way. As we live our lives, as we speak, we are called to show the character of Jesus to the world that doesn’t understand. If Jesus lives in us, He is going to shine through. In a world that is spiritually dark, the light of Jesus brings clarity, truth, joy, beauty and life to our world. If you are a follower of Jesus, you are the light of the world. Let your light shine.
