May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Encouragement

One of the major challenges that Canadian government officials felt they faced at the end of the nineteenth century was the development of the prairie West. By this time there were large urban centers in eastern Canada. They hoped that filling the Canadian prairies – Manitoba and what would become Saskatchewan – with prosperous family farmers they would support the industrialized cities of the East. To do this the government engaged in a systematic program to encourage immigration of farmers and agricultural labourers from the United States and Britain.

Encouragement is one of the greatest gifts anyone can give another. Life can be challenging and we are always grateful for those who during those challenging times come alongside us and encourage us to press on and live about our circumstances. For the followers of Jesus, God has provided encouragers. Paul writes this in 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” Paul had been blessed by his friend Barnabas, who was known as the son of encouragement. Paul had also been blessed by the encouragement provided by the Triune God as he served the Lord Jesus. Paul knew the encouragement that comes with the assurance that our sins have been forgiven and eternal life assured. As well, Paul had been encouraged by God as he faithfully served Him throughout his missionary journeys. As we walk in obedience to Jesus, finding ourselves in the centre of God’s will, we will experience great encouragement as we serve Him and great joy as we see Him at work through us.
