Words from the Heart for Wednesday August 18th, 2021
Don’t be like a ruler over those you are responsible for. But be good examples to them.
1 Peter 5:3 (ERV)
According to the website HealthyFamiliesBC.ca: “Children are influenced by the world around them, but your [parents] actions and attitudes have the strongest influence on them when it comes to many things, including drinking, smoking or using drugs. Setting a good example helps protect your child from making unhealthy choices as they continue to grow and become more independent. Your kids learn to process what they see, make choices about what to mimic, and when to engage in certain behaviours by watching the things you do.
Wise parents understand that one of their main responsibilities is to set a good example for their children. They live their lives consistently, knowing that their children are always watching. The Bible tells us that we who are in leadership within the church must also consistently set an example for those we lead. The apostle articulates this principle clearly in 1 Peter 5:3: “Don’t be like a ruler over those you are responsible for. But be good examples to them.” Godly leaders are called to be different than those who are not followers of Jesus. Often those in leadership have a sense of entitlement. They feel they can live their lives any way they want. How many leaders in politics, entertainment, business or athletics have fallen because they have an “I’m above the law” or “I can set my own morality standards” attitude? What a contrast to how we who are followers of Jesus are called to live and lead. Likewise parents, and with Jesus as our example, we are to set an example in all we say and do. The world is watching – let’s set a good example today.
These have been words from the heart.
