Words from the Heart for Wednesday August 11th, 2021
True love is God’s love for us, not our love for God. God sent his Son to die in our place to take away our sins.
1 John 4:10 (ICB)
Knights in shining armor, love at first sight, getting swept off your feet, yes, we’re talking about that certain fuzzy feeling as well. But believe it or not, four out of five Canadians still believe in everlasting love. LoveAgain.com, a dating website aimed at men and women over 40, surveyed 2,000 Canadians and found that, despite record high divorce rates and modern-day relationship pressures, a majority of users still believe in true love.
When human beings speak of “true love” they think of finding that one special person who loves them and is whatever they think of as the perfect partner. Since there is no perfect human being, true love is not easy to find. Our flaws will become evident soon enough. There is one exception. The apostle writes this in 1 John 4:10: “True love is God’s love for us, not our love for God. God sent his Son to die in our place to take away our sins.” The only place that a person can find true love, John says, is in the person of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us on the Cross. Our love for God will always be fickle. We say we love the Lord, and in our heart of hearts we genuinely want to, but we too easily find it impossible to live up to Jesus’ command, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Which is why John reminds us that true love is not our love for God, but His love for us. His love doesn’t come with strings attached, and it never fails. If you want to experience true love, you will discover it through faith and trust in Jesus Christ.
