Words from the Heart for Wednesday April 3rd, 2019

Abijah committed all the sins his father had committed before him. Abijah didn’t obey the Lord his God with all his heart. He didn’t do what King David had done. But the Lord still kept the lamp of Abijah’s kingdom burning brightly in Jerusalem. He did it by giving him a son to be the next king after him. He also did it by making Jerusalem strong. The Lord did those things because of David.

Family Matters

There are now 9.8 million families in Canada, according to the 2016 Census. This is 15 times as many as in 1871 when the first census was taken after Confederation. Yet as the number of families increased, their size decreased. Back in the 19th century, Canada was mostly a rural society with small, family-run farms. Larger families meant that more children were around to help run the farm. But families have always come in different shapes and sizes. Even then, lone-parent families and stepfamilies were quite common, because mortality was much higher.

We live in a day when we have largely forgotten our past. What happened before is too often seen in a negative light and too many in our society want to erase everything. While it can be correctly argued that there were things done in the past that we regret today, the positive things we enjoy today are because of a Biblical foundation laid by our forefathers. God never forgets the past. I Kings 15:3-4 says “Abijah committed all the sins his father had committed before him. The Lord did those things because of David.” Abijah did not rule well. He followed in the sinful footsteps of his father Rehoboam. God had every right to condemn Judah for their sin. But he didn’t, because he remembered the faithfulness of King David three generations before.
