Words from the Heart for Tuesday September 7th, 2021
I command you today to love the Lord your God. Do what he wants you to do. Keep his commands, his rules and his laws. Then you will live and grow in number. And the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are going to take as your own.
Deuteronomy 30:16 (ICB)
Love the Lord Your God
Since the beginning of European settlement in Canada, a gouverneur or governor general has been at the head of the country as the representative of the Crown. Lord Monck, the country’s first governor general at Confederation, was sworn in on 1 July 1867. He had served as Governor of British North America since 1861. Lord Monck worked hard to build Confederation. His efforts to unite and stabilize the young country were recognized with his appointment to the position of Canada’s first Governor General in 1867.
Here in Canada, we aren’t used to hearing about lords anymore. It hasn’t been legal for a Canadian to become a lord for over a century. Historically, lords were those who ruled over others, and who had responsibility for their good. The Bible speaks often of God being Lord – when we become followers of Jesus by placing our faith and trust in Him, He takes his rightful place as Lord of our lives. How then shall we live? The Bible says this in Deuteronomy 30:16: “I command you today to love the Lord your God. Do what he wants you to do. Keep his commands, his rules and his laws. Then you will live and grow in number. And the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are going to take as your own.” God called the people of Israel to be His own. He would care for them and provide for them. He would redeem them as they walked with Him. He has redeemed us as well, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In return, we are called to place our lives under His control, living a life that honours Him.
These have been words from the heart.
