Words from the Heart for Tuesday September 3rd, 2019
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
Massive Health, the company behind the iPhone app Eatery, has reportedly narrowed down the most popular foods and drinks in Canada based on data from their eight million global users. The results really aren’t all that surprising. Canadians drink Americano coffee 8.64 times more than any other country. We eat 6.19 times more maple flavoured products than people in any other country. And we do love ribs. We eat them 2.77 times more than any other country on the planet.
We often think of grace as being a New Testament concept. The God of the Hebrew Scriptures is often perceived as being violent and vindictive, while the God of the New Testament is all about love and grace. The reality is that both of those views are unbalanced. The God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament and in Lamentations 3:22-23 we see this side of God’s nature: “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” This is one of the most beautiful pictures of God’s love and grace. The Bible is clear that God has every right to judge us because of our sin and rebellion against Him. And He is perfect justice, so He cannot simply ignore the sin of His people. But He is also the God of agape love and perfect grace, so through Jesus’ death and resurrection, His justice is met and His forgiveness is available. Out of His great compassion, we are not consumed. He has faithfully provided all we need for redemption, forgiveness and eternal life. Great is His faithfulness. Go ahead. Sing the song.
These have been words from the heart.
