Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
John 14:5 (NKJV)
How Can We Know the Way?
The Trans-Canada Highway is a transcontinental federal-provincial highway system that travels through all ten provinces of Canada from the Pacific Ocean on the west to the Atlantic on the east. The main route spans 7,821 km across the country, one of the longest routes of its type in the world. The highway system is recognizable by its distinctive white-on-green maple leaf route markers, although there are small variations in the markers in some provinces.
The apostle Thomas has come to be known as doubting Thomas because he told the others that he wouldn’t believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he could place his finger in the wounds of the Lord. This label is unfortunate, because as we read the Gospels we see in Thomas an inquisitive mind, asking questions that have helped us understand more about the nature of Jesus and His kingdom. We see this in John 14:5, where we read “Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus had just told the disciples that he was going to prepare a room for them in his Father’s house, and that they knew the way. But honest Thomas didn’t know what Jesus meant, so he asks a question that we are glad he did – we really don’t know where You are going, Lord. If we don’t know where you are going, how is it possible for us to know the way? Jesus loves honest questions. His desire is that we would understand who He is and what He has come to do. As you study His word today, do so with good questions. He will answer.
These have been words from the heart.
