Words from the Heart for Tuesday September 24th, 2019
…but they do not realize that I remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them; they are always before me.
Hosea 7:2 (NIV)
Engulfed by Sin
Made up of over 200 islands, the Gulf Islands of British Columbia are one of BC’s most popular visitor destinations. Within these islands there are 5 major islands which are serviced by daily ferries from both Vancouver and Victoria. Salt Spring, Pender, Mayne, Galiano and Saturna are the most popular Gulf Islands, and they offer a variety of activities and services to the visitor. Days can be spent exploring the rocky shores of these islands, kayaking the waters between them, or simply browsing through the local craft markets.
I remember counseling a couple some years ago, and I knew that their marriage was in trouble when the wife could list, from memory, everything she blamed him for doing, including the date of each of his transgressions. The heart of the problem was that she found great joy in bringing those up against him constantly. What a contrast to how God works. Now, it is true that God does keep an account of our sin. Hosea 7:2 says “…but they do not realize that I remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them; they are always before me.” God is a just God and He can’t just ignore our sin. To let the guilty walk free without a penalty being paid would not be justice. But unlike the unforgiving wife, God longs to forgive us. He loves us with an unconditional love. To solve this dilemma – God loves us and wants to forgive us, but can’t just ignore our sin – Jesus came to bear the punishment that we deserve for our sin upon Himself. God’s justice was meted out on Jesus, and His love expressed perfectly. What a God we have, who loves us this much.
These have been words from the heart.
