Words from the Heart for Tuesday October 1st, 2019
On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.
Obadiah 1:11 (NIV)
Standing with the Persecuted
On June 4, 1969, Canada belatedly signed the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, 18 years after it was adopted by the United Nations, and 15 years after it entered into force. In the 50 years since Canada became a party to the Refugee Convention, it has gained the enviable reputation of being a world leader in protecting refugees. In fact, there has been good and bad in Canadian responses to refugees, both before and after signing the Refugee Convention.
There are more Christians persecuted for their faith in our day than at any other time in the history of the world. In over 50 countries around the world, followers of Jesus are suffering simply for their faith, and anti-Christian sentiment is on the rise in many others. God cares deeply for those who are suffering for His sake, and He calls us to stand with and support them. There is a prophetic word given against the people of Edom, the descendants of Esau, in Obadiah 1:11. The Edomites had watched as the Israelites were carried off into captivity and God condemns them for this. He says: “On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.” These are strong words from the Lord – for not standing with God’s people in their time of need, they were no better than those who carried them off into captivity. Let us who love the Lord Jesus not be guilty of the same thing when it comes to those Christians who are suffering for the sake of Jesus today.
These have been words from the heart.
