Words from the Heart for Tuesday October 19th, 2021
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
2 Timothy 2:13 (NLT)
He Remains Faithful
Canadians on the whole are faithful when it comes to their marriage. A 2015 Mainstreet Research survey discovered that just 13 per cent of men and eight per cent of women admitted to cheating on their spouse or partner. A 2014 Bank of Montreal survey discovered that fighting over money would be their top reason for divorce (68 per cent), followed by infidelity (60 per cent) and disagreements about family (36 per cent).
Human beings celebrate faithfulness. Social media is filled with celebrations of decades’ long marriages and viewership of TV shows increases in episodes where well-loved characters get married. The challenge is that in our sin, we are prone to wander, as the old hymn says. We fail too easily and too often in keeping our promises. The Bible understands this, and gives a good promise in 2 Timothy 2:13. In speaking about the faithfulness of God, it says “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.” The God we have come to know through faith in Jesus Christ is by nature faithful. It is impossible for Him to break a promise or to go back on His word, even if we do. When we break our promises to Him, we can count on Him welcoming us back when we confess our sin and unfaithfulness. The apostle Peter could testify to this. He denied the Lord Jesus three times in one evening, and as soon after Jesus’ resurrection as possible, Jesus came looking for Peter to restore him. He comes after you as well. It doesn’t matter how unfaithful you have been to the Lord or to others – God is faithful and He will restore you.
These have been words from the heart.
