Words from the Heart for Tuesday November 6th, 2018
Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.
I Chronicles 29:16 (NIV)
It All Belongs to You
These words spoken by King David were not just true for him. For all of us, it is the Lord who releases what we have into our hands. Do we look at our lives and possessions as belonging to Him? He is our Source. When we give to the Lord we are just giving back what belongs to Him. He has made a wonderful commitment to us as Provider God.
Who belongs to Canada’s middle class? In the 1980’s, MIT political economist Lester Thurow defined the American middle class as those who earned between 75 per cent and 125 per cent of the median income, which in Canada would mean families earning between $35,000 and $70,000 a year. By that measure fewer than a quarter of Canadians are actually middle class. The number of Canadian families who fall below it has jumped from 36 per cent to 40 per cent since the 1970’s.
Followers of Jesus understand the source of every blessing we have – and not just spiritual blessing. When the people of Israel were building the Temple, the Lord called to them to give generously. And they did so with willing hearts. It wasn’t difficult for them because they recognized that everything they had came from the Lord. It was He who was providing the funds for the building materials used in the construction of the building. 1 Chronicles 29:16 says “Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.” This principle has not changed. We live in a country of great abundance and we need to acknowledge that all we have has been provided by the Lord. So when He calls us to give generously so that His Kingdom can be expanded, we ought to give freely. We can never out-give the Lord, and as we support the work of the Lord, we can be sure that He will provide all we need to continue to so. Where is He calling you to be generous today?
These have been words from the heart.
