He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.

Psalm 103:12 (NLT)

The East from the West

This is an amazing, gracious promise from a mighty God that He doesn’t just overlook our sins. Rather, He removes our sins once and for all. There really is no way to measure the distance that east is from the west because it is a never-ending circle. Here God is giving us the picture that we can really be free. Our sins are gone! Take time to thank Him once again for this great gift of forgiveness of sin. He is a wonderful Saviour.

The Trans-Canada highway, at 7841 kilometers, is the fourth longest highway in the world, stretching from Victoria, BC, in the west to St. John’s, Newfoundland, in the east. The system was approved by the Trans-Canada Highway Act of 1949, with construction commencing in 1950. The highway officially opened in 1962, and was completed in 1971. Upon its original completion, the Trans-Canada Highway was the most lengthy uninterrupted highway in the world. The highway system is recognizable by its distinctive white-on-green maple leaf route markers.

Have you noticed that on the planet earth there is a point that marks north and a point that marks south, but there is no east or west? The north pole is a specific place as is the south pole and we can measure the exact distance between those two points. But east and west is unmeasurable. Which brings us to our text for today and a wonderful spiritual truth. Psalm 103:12 says, “”He has removed our sin as far from us as east is from west.” The Psalmist chose east and west with purpose. Just as the distance between east and west is immeasurable, so is the distance our sins have been removed from us. The moment we receive by faith Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, our sins are wiped away. Under the old covenant the sins of the people were placed on the mercy seat and the blood of an unblemished lamb was placed over them so God could not see them. But the sin was still there, and so was the guilt and shame. Only Jesus’ blood has the power to remove our sin – and send it an eternity away.
