Hunger and Thirst

Household food insecurity is the inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints. It is a serious problem in Canada that negatively impacts physical, mental, and social health, and costs our healthcare system considerably. In 2017, 1 in 8 households in Canada was food insecure, amounting to 4.4 million people, including more than 1.2 million children living in food-insecure households. Nunavut had the highest prevalence of food insecurity at 57%. The lowest prevalence of household food insecurity was in Quebec, at 11.1%.

It is a challenge to a prosperous society that so many deal with food insecurity. It says a lot about a country that is dealing with obesity while at the same time trying to provide for those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. It’s good to have a conversation about this. There is another hunger that is hardly every discussed – the hunger and thirst of the human soul. Jesus says this in John 6:35: “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’” What a wonderful promise from the Lord. Because of sin, there is a deep spiritual hunger and thirst that gnaws at us, causing a craving for something that seems unquenchable. The good news is that there is One who can meet that deepest of all spiritual needs. Jesus calls Himself the bread of life and the water of life. When we trust Him as Saviour and Lord, He takes up residence in our hearts and fills us to overflowing constantly. Have you invited Jesus to meet your deepest spiritual need? There is no one else who can.
