Words from the Heart for Tuesday March 30th, 2021
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John 19:26–27 (NIV)
Here is Your Mother
The town of St. Mary’s is located 45 kms northeast of London Ontario at the junction of the north branch of the Thames River and Trout Creek. The first settlers, back in the early 1940s took advantage of the river water cascading over a series of limestone ridges that provided power necessary to run pioneer mills. Known at first as Little Falls, it is now nicknamed the Stone Town because of the abundance of limestone used to construct the town’s buildings.
Throughout the Gospels we see the compassion of Jesus as He ministered to the sick, despised, heartbroken and hated. His care for people was sometimes shocking, sometimes heart wrenching, and often surprising. But nowhere is His care for others seen more than from the cross, when in spite of His excruciating pain, he looked down to see His beloved mother Mary at the foot of the cross, standing next to the youngest of His disciples, John. In the Gospel that this disciple would later write, in John 19:26-27, we read: “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” Jesus understood the pain his mother was enduring as she stood and watched her son dying on the cross. Jesus gives John the command to care for Mary. What a beautiful picture of Jesus’ love. He cares for you, as well. When your heart is broken, when you are facing the emotional pain that grief brings on, never doubt that Jesus cares. Reach out in faith to Him and He will speak into your need as well.
