Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Matthew 24:42-44 NIV

The Lord Will Come

Canada was 56 years old before its first visit by a sitting US President. In June 1923, President Warren G. Harding embarked on what he called a “Voyage of Understanding.” It consisted of a cross-country journey through the continental United States, along with stops in Canada and the Alaska Territory—the first official visits to those areas by a sitting U.S. President. On July 27, he made a brief stop in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he gave a speech and played some golf, one of his favourite pastimes.

The Hebrew Scriptures contain over three hundred prophecies that speak about the first coming of the Messiah Jesus. They had waited centuries for His arrival and when He finally did come, they failed to recognize Him. They were looking for the Messiah to deliver them from the hated Romans – Jesus came to deliver them from their sin, guilt and shame. There are over 1800 Bible passages about the second coming of Jesus – some 318 of them in the New Testament alone. As we watch all that is happening in our world, and particularly in the Middle East these days, we think “His return must be getting close.” But we don’t know for sure. Jesus taught this in Matthew 24:42-44: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
