Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Our society still celebrates a long marriage. The work that goes into a couple staying in love for a lifetime is recognized. What we know to be true is that actions speak louder than words. A couple that has a lifelong relationship has shown their love to each other in countless ways over the decades. Birthdays and anniversaries have been remembered, small acts of kindness have been done, vows given when young have been kept throughout the marriage. The Bible teaches that love is proven not just in words that are spoken, but in actions. 1 John 3:18 puts it this way: “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” It is easy enough to express love with words. We can repeat the sweetest thing we have seen online or in a Hallmark card, but until we have expressed those sentiments in the way we act towards someone else, in small ways and large, we have not proven our love. This is so in human relationships and in our faith relationship with Jesus Christ. Take time today to consider what you can do to prove your love for Jesus, and for others.

These have been words from the heart.
