Words from the Heart for Tuesday June 29th, 2021
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
Philippians 4:4-5 (NLT)
Full of Joy
By the final full day of competition at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, Canada had yet to win a gold medal and Greg Joy was the nation’s last hope. In the men’s high jump final, Joy found himself in the hunt for an Olympic title. When 20-year-old Joy cleared 7’4”, he had beaten world record holder American Dwight Stones, and the home crowd of 70,000 went crazy knowing Joy had the silver for sure. Joy failed at 2.25m and won the silver medal, becoming a national hero.
Joy is one of God’s greatest gifts. Joy is something altogether different from happiness. Happiness is usually affected by what is going on in our lives at the moment – it comes and goes depending on current circumstances. The joy of the Lord, however, is a foundational blessing in our lives that is given to us when we receive Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and it is our strength. It comes when we have the experience and the assurance of our sins having been removed and God’s righteousness replacing that sin. It is why Paul reminds us of this in Philippians 4:4-5: “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” With our sins having been removed, we have the assurance of eternal life. No matter what is happening in our lives and in our world, we have the promise of eternity with the Lord. The Lord is coming soon, Paul reminds us – so be full of the joy of the Lord. Rejoice! Today.
