Words from the Heart for Tuesday June 22nd, 2021
To you a thousand years are like a day that has just gone by. They are like a few hours of the night.
Psalm 90:4 (NIrV)
A Thousand Years
A thousand years ago, North America looked very much like it does today. The land around Hudson Bay, however, was continuing to rise as it was recovering from the weight of the glacier that filled the region. Coastlines dating to 1,000 years ago are now dozens of kilometres inland. 1,000 years ago only the tops of the highest mountains and a few of the coldest, most isolated Arctic Islands remained unoccupied by First Peoples. Indeed, more of North America’s land mass was in use then, than now.
When we look at all that is happening in our world today, we ask, with the Psalmist, “how long, O Lord?” News travels fast, and we are so quickly made aware of all the bad news, tragedies, genocides and pandemics that are taking place at the moment. So much of what we learn about breaks our hearts and we wonder how much longer God, who sees and hears all things, can put up with all this sin and injustice. Jesus promised that He would return, but it has been two millennia and He hasn’t come back yet to set all things right. In Psalm 90:4 we read: “To you a thousand years are like a day that has just gone by. They are like a few hours of the night.” God has a timetable for all that He has planned, in the big picture of history and in your life and mine. We are called to trust not only in His plan, but in His timing as well. He will set all things right in our lives – we are called to wait on the Lord for His plan to be fulfilled. Are you?
These have been words from the heart.
