Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.

Ecclesiastes 4:6 (NIV)

U.S. News & World Report has released its 2021 Best Countries rankings, which takes into account responses to a survey of more than 17,000 business leaders; college-educated individuals middle class or higher and general citizens who are nationally representative of their country. Canada ranks number one for the first time ever in 2021, finishing tops in the all-important categories of quality of life and social purpose. What’s more, the North American country is perceived as having a solid job market, caring about human rights and being committed to social justice.

Canadians are blessed. While life can get hectic and the pandemic has caused a rise in mental health issues and family conflict, we live in a country that is free of war and filled with places where we can “get away from it all.” The God who created us understands that the need for times of peace and tranquility are important for our overall health. Ecclesiastes 4:6 tells us “Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.” Gaining material goods is not the end all and be all of life. Those who don’t know Christ and who don’t have eternity in mind only have what this life offers. As a result, many work hard to gain all that the world offers. However, we who are followers of Jesus realize that gaining all the world has to offer is a useless ambition – chasing after the wind our text for today says. How much better to seek the things of God’s Kingdom and so experience the peace and tranquility that only He can provide. What are you chasing after these days? Better less of this world and more of God’s peace.

These have been words from the heart.
