The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.
Isaiah 11:6 (NIV)
Led By a Little Child
Each year an estimated 390,000 babies are born in Canada. Although most of these babies reach the average 40 weeks of gestation normally required for full growth and development, nearly 8 percent are born prematurely – at 37 weeks or less. These premature babies face serious complications and are at higher risk of developing chronic health conditions later in life. Even more serious, preterm birth accounts for two-thirds of infant deaths in Canada. Research is taking place to improve the chances of survival.
Every Christmas people put three eastern magi standing in the nativity scene, holding their gifts for the baby Jesus. It’s lovely, but not in the Bible. The magi would arrive at the house where Jesus was living with Mary and Joseph probably about the time he was almost 2. And, we all know that the Bible tells us that the day is coming when the lion will lie down with the lamb. Except that nowhere in the Bible does it tell us that. What it does say is this, in Isaiah 11:6: “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.” There is coming a day of peace – a return to the Garden of Eden so to speak, when all living things will exist in harmony under the leadership of Jesus. In a broken world, we long for the day when those who are natural enemies in this fallen world will dwell peaceably together. So while the Bible doesn’t say the lion will lie down with the lamb, the point that statement makes is solidly Biblical and our great hope.
