Words from the Heart for Tuesday July 2nd, 2019
When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 118:5-6 (NIV)
When Hard Pressed
The Dry Cleaners industry in Canada provides dry cleaning and laundry services to consumers and businesses, such as hotels and clinics. Over the past decade, shifting consumer trends toward casual clothing reduced the need for dry cleaning services that are typically only used for formal and office wear. The proliferation of casual office attire continues to reduce demand for dry cleaning services. Dry cleaning is a price-premium service, and consumers typically only dry clean formal attire that cannot be laundered at home. Dry cleaners have implemented price hikes over the five years to maintain profitability amid falling demand.
I watched a friend who owns a dry cleaning business use a pressing machine the other day. It is an amazing piece of machinery, taking out all the wrinkles in a suit jacket instantly. I’m glad I wasn’t the suit jacket, however. The steam let me know it was hot, and my friend pressed down hard. Sometimes we feel like life is doing that to us. How do we cope at times like that? David gives us the answer in Psalm 118:5-6: “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” I have found that when the challenges of life come, my first response is to breathe out the name Jesus. Immediately, peace comes to my heart. The circumstances don’t necessarily change, but my attitude does. I suspect that when David says that the Lord brought him to a spacious place, it might not have been physically. If you are hard pressed right now, call out the name of Jesus. His immediate gift will be His peace.
These have been words from the heart.
