The Bible often speaks about the power of temptation. Our sinful nature is naturally drawn to pursue that which leads to sin. The reason that Jesus came was to transform our hearts so instead of desiring what pleases the flesh, we desire to do what honours Him. As long as we live in this world, however, we will be faced with temptation. Paul the apostle gives some good advice for followers of Jesus in 2 Timothy 2:22. In writing to his young friend and brother in Christ, Paul says “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” Notice here that Paul counsels Timothy, and us, to run from something and run to something. We are called to flee anything that would tempt us to please our fleshly nature and draw us away from Jesus, and to run toward those things that make us more like Jesus. It takes self-control and more importantly, Holy Spirit control. It also takes being in fellowship with other believers, who will stand with us as we daily commit to living a life that honours Jesus.
