Words from the Heart for Tuesday January 29th, 2019

If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left in their care or about something stolen …when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must …make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.

Leviticus 6:2-5 (NIV)

Restitution

In Canada, since July 23, 2015, a restitution order requires the offender to pay the victim for financial losses the victim suffered because of the offender’s crime. Restitution can only be ordered for losses up to the time the offender is sentenced. It is part of an offender’s sentence and can be a stand-alone order or part of a probation order or conditional sentence. Restitution amounts must be easy to calculate and not in great dispute.

God is not only concerned about our relationship with Him, but He is concerned with our relationship with others. This is clear in the Ten Commandments – the first four have to do with our relationship with Him and the rest are focused on our relationship with those around us – family, friends, neighbours. Jesus said the entire law can be summed up in two laws – love the Lord with everything in us and love our neighbour as ourselves. And when we don’t treat others correctly, God even gives the antidote. In Leviticus 6:2-5 we read: “”If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left in their care or about something stolen …when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must …make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.”” Is there someone with whom you need to make restitution? Ask the Lord to give you wisdom in this, and then go to them to make right what you have done to harm that relationship.

These have been words from the heart.
