Words from the Heart for Tuesday January 21st, 2020
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 (NIV)
The Golden Rule
Back in 2016, Canada sold off most of its remaining gold reserves, mainly by selling gold coins. By the time the selling was over, the country held just $19 million US worth of gold. Through most of 2015, the country’s gold reserves stood at more than $100 million US. The government of Canada hasn’t been a big buyer of gold coins, or any other gold, for years. That’s not too surprising, since no country now uses a gold standard to value and back its currency.
Even those who know little about the Gospel of Jesus Christ are aware that the Bible teaches something called the Golden Rule. I remember as a child having a ruler in my desk at school that was called the Golden Ruler because it had the Golden Rule printed on it – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It is a common principle to many of the world’s religions. This shouldn’t be surprising since it is a principle that helps people get along with each other. Jesus put it this way in Matthew 7:12: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” You will notice that Jesus adds an important caveat – the principle of doing unto others what you would have them do unto you is the sum of all the teaching of the Law and the Prophets. In other words, this is a foundational principle to the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no getting around this – God’s people are to treat others as we would want them to treat us. What does that mean for you today?
These have been words from the heart.
