Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 54:10 NIV

Unshaken Love

Seismologists locate more than 4000 earthquakes every year in Canada and the surrounding areas. Most of these earthquakes are smaller than magnitude 3 (M3) and are not felt. However, there have also been many large earthquakes in Canada. While some have occurred in remote regions, others have occurred in populated regions causing damage, injury and even death. These large earthquakes generally measure M6 or greater. The Queen Charlotte Fault was the site of three of the largest earthquakes in Canada’s history, including the largest one in 150 years.

In this day when social media enables us to get news from around the globe instantly, we hear so often and see images, of the damage that earthquakes do no matter where they happen. It seems that the world is shaking like never before. The reality is that the planet has always been rocking, at least since Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden. So the ancient words of the prophet are as appropriate for us today as they were when God spoke these words, recorded in Isaiah 54:10: “’Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” It isn’t just earthquakes that rock our world – there are lots of things that shake us to the depth of our being – illness, financial pressures, family dysfunction, the death of a loved one. In every case, we stand firm on the promise that God gives to His people through Isaiah – God’s unfailing love for us can never be shaken. No matter what happens you can count on this – God loves you.

These have been words from the heart.
