Words from the Heart for Tuesday February 19th, 2019
To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.
Deuteronomy 10:14 (NIV)
It all Belongs to Him
According to Maclean’s magazine, fewer than a quarter of Canadians belong to the middle class. In the 1980s, MIT political economist Lester Thurow defined the American middle class as those who earned between 75 per cent and 125 per cent of the median income, which in Canada would mean families earning between $35,000 and $70,000 a year. Back in the 1970’s, using this guide, almost a third of Canadians belonged to the middle class.
I have cousins that live in the Cotswolds in England. It is one of the last vestiges of what life was like in the Downton Abbey days. In order to fish in the river, you have to get permission of the Lord who owns all the land and the waterways that run through the pastures. While the Lord has a deed to all the land, the reality is that he doesn’t own anything, and neither do we. Deuteronomy 10:14 says “To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.” The Lord owns everything, but not the English lord in the town of Fairford. The Lord that owns everything truly is the Lord – the one who created it has all the rights to it. What a blessing to know that He allows us to enjoy all that He has created. He is a generous God who provides all we need for daily living. How freeing it is to know that what we have isn’t really ours. We are called to live a life of generosity knowing that He has given us what we have to be a blessing to others.
These have been words from the heart.
