Words from the Heart for Tuesday February 12th, 2019

Moses said to the Lord, “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.”

Numbers 27:15-18 (NIV)

Succession

Unlike the United States, there is no formal line of succession when the Prime Minister is unable for any reason to continue his or her duties. While there is provision for designation of a Deputy Prime Minister, the position is in no way the same as the Vice-President in the US. It carries no formal authority to succeed the PM. The Constitutional tradition is that the Governor General would consult with the Cabinet of the party in power and take their advice on a suitable replacement.

Life goes by quickly. The four decades or so between the beginning of our work life and retirement seem to fly by. Moses had led his people for four decades as they traveled through the wilderness. But the time was coming for succession planning. Numbers 27:15-18 says this: “Moses said to the Lord, “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.”” God always has the long view. He who is outside of time has a plan that lasts into eternity. And He had a plan for a successor for Moses. As He had Moses over the years, God had been grooming Joshua to step into the role as leader of Israel. These were different times and Israel would need a different leader. For what has the Lord been preparing you?

These have been words from the heart.
