Words from the Heart for Tuesday December 24th, 2019
We love because he first loved us.
1 John 4:19 (NIV)
Because He First Loved Us
Ask most people who the first Europeans were to see the Pacific Ocean by crossing the North American continent and they will answer, “Lewis and Clark.” This is the case for the United States. But, 12 years before, the Canadian expedition of Alexander Mackenzie succeeded in accomplishing precisely the same feat of tracing a river route through the continent to the Pacific: the main differences being that Mackenzie followed a longer, more difficult route.
If there is a theme to Christmas, it is love. The greatest love gift of all time is the gift of Jesus, who entered into our world some 2000 years ago, born into a cattle shed in a small town on the outskirts of Jerusalem called Bethlehem. The Bible tells us that the gift of this child, the Messiah, was the sign of the extent of God’s love for us – for God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son. This was all God’s initiative. As 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because he first loved us.” The impact of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection is a transformed life for all who place their faith and trust in Him. And once Jesus has taken hold of our heart, and poured His love into us, we are called to love others with His unconditional love. How can you do that over the next week or so? The Christmas season can be very challenging for those who are alone. Ask the Lord who you can invite for your family Christmas dinner. Who do you know that will be spending Christmas alone? Who particularly needs to experience Jesus’ love through you? As you have experienced His love, pour that love out to someone else.
These have been words from the heart.
