Words from the Heart for Tuesday December 22nd, 2020

…an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:20-21 (NIV)

He Will Save

It just so happens that besides November 11 being Remembrance Day, it is also the date, back in 1813, that a battle that saved Canada was fought at Crysler’s Farm near Cornwall Ontario. A force of some 7,000 US soldiers were driven back that day by around 1,000 British regular soldiers, reinforced by 30 Mohawk warriors, 60 local Canadian militiamen and a number of soldiers from both Upper and Lower Canada – Ontario and Quebec today. The St. Lawrence River remained under Canadian control.

Just as in our day, the last thing the world needed when Jesus was born was another teacher, or counselor, or prophet. God had been sending prophets for centuries, and His people continued to wander. Israel was filled with rabbis, as it is today. What the world needed then, as it still does today, is one who can restore our relationship with God, removing our sin and giving us a whole new heart, an entire new nature. So, it shouldn’t surprise us what the angel said to Joseph in Matthew 1:20-21: “…an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” The name Jesus, or Yeshua in Hebrew, means “God saves.” Ultimately what every human being needs, then and now, is a Saviour. And by His death on the cross, Jesus has become that for all who have trusted Him. Have you?
