Words from the Heart for Tuesday December 21st, 2021
John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Luke 3:16 (NRSV)
How things have changed in Canada. Back in 2013 when the Coalition of Global Cities released their list of World Class Cities, there wasn’t a single Canadian city that was worthy of being considered world-class. When the list was released in 2020, Toronto was number 8 on the list. It is included with such cities as Sydney, Los Angeles, Singapore and Tokyo. At the top of this list is, to no one’s surprise, New York City.
The coming of John the Baptist, the one who would prepare the way for Jesus the Messiah, had been prophesied centuries before. Malachi 3:1 says, “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts.” John played a vital role in preparing the hearts of people for Jesus. He was an important part of God’s redemption plan. But he also understood just how far greater Jesus was than he, or anyone else for that matter. In Luke 3:16 John says “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Compared to Jesus, none of us are worthy. But Jesus loves us and by His death and resurrection we are made worthy. It is by recognizing our need for Jesus that we declare His worth. It is one of the foundational principles of the Kingdom of God – when we declare His worth, in His redemption we discover our own worth as well.
